What Is Sunstone Made Of?

Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar mineral like Labradorite and Rainbow Moonstone.

Sunstone displays a shimmering Schiller Effect termed 'aventurescence': the stone is famed for its twinkling, sparkling flecks caused by the reflection of light between tiny mineral inclusions.

This aventurescent effect is thus named because it is also present in Aventurine: for this reason, Sunstone has also been called 'aventurescent feldspar'.

Due to this aventurescence, Sunstone displays glittering, golden metallic flashes as a result of either shimmering copper inclusions or hematite inclusions.

Oregon Sunstone tends to include copper, whilst Sunstone from India, such as this piece, tends to include hematite.

Sunstone History

Sunstone has been revered since ancient times, and has been worshipped as a representation of various Sun Gods in many different cultures due to its warm, sunny aventurescent effect and golden hues. 

For this reason, Sunstone has also been called 'Heliolite' after the Greek Sun God Helios.

Sunstone is heavily associated with the Sacral Chakra: crystal healers believe the stone exudes a warm, sunny energy which enhances feelings of joy, pleasure, and creativity in its user.

How Hard Is Sunstone?

Measuring 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, this mineral is relatively hard and durable, but care should still be taken not to damage the crystal surface. 

To clean the crystal, simply use water and a soft cloth.
