What Is Malachite Made Of?
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, often found in limestone deposits (which is the source of carbon for the mineral) alongside azurite and other minerals.
Chrysocolla commonly forms near Malachite, and sometimes the two minerals grow together to form Malacholla.
Deep inside caves, Malachite usually forms in botryoidal crystal clusters (crystals with a grape-like shape) or as stalactites.
Although similar in patterning to many Agate Stones, Malachite is not a form of Agate.
This green semi precious stone is often polished to form stunning green gemstones.
Where Does Malachite Come From?
Malachite is found in countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, the USA (Southwestern US States, especially Arizona), and historically, the Ural Mountains in Russia (the Urals), amongst other countries.
Malachite History
Malachite is one of the oldest gemstones discovered and used by humans, and was used in many ancient cultures worldwide.
The name "Malachite" was originally coined in Ancient Greece: the name roughly translates in Modern English to "Mallow Green Stone".
It is thought that Malachite was named "Mallow Green Stone" because of the similarity of the green gemstone's colours to the green leaves of the Mallow Plant.
Malachite In Ancient Egypt: Fields Of Malachite
In Ancient Egypt, Malachite was particularly revered as a stone representing life, death, and re-birth.
Malachite decorated the tombs of pharaohs and other Ancient Egyptian royalty: much like Lapis Lazuli, it was a sign of wealth and royalty, as well as an important religious symbol referencing the after-life.
It was believed in Ancient Egypt that Malachite could aid safe passage into the after-life, and the after-life itself for this reason was sometimes referred to as the Fields of Malachite.
Malachite Spirituality And Superstitions
Malachite was not only spiritually important to the Ancient Egyptians, but also to people throughout various historical eras and global civilisations.
For example, in France in the 11th and 12th centuries and Spain in the 17th century, Malachite was crafted into talismans and protection stones to to protect the wearer from harm, to ward off evil spirits, and to help children sleep.
In the Middle Ages, Malachite engravings and Malachite talismans were used to protect one's health and vitality from sickness and disease, and were recommended especially for Capricorns: for this reason, to this day Malachite is associated with the Capricorn Zodiac Sign.
Malachite Decorative Uses
Both historically and to this day, Malachite has been a popular stone to craft into Malachite gemstones and Malachite jewellery, owing to its striking colours and patterns.
Malachite decorations and Malachite accessories have a rich history, for Malachite was used to decorate important buildings and structures such as the tombs of pharaohs in Ancient Egypt, and the palaces of 19th Century Russia.
Malachite was particularly popular in Russia in the 19th century, where it was mined in the Ural Mountains and used by tsars to decorate their opulent palaces, including with furniture and vases sculpted from the Malachite stone.
The most famous example of this is perhaps the aptly named Malachite Room of the Winter Palace, in St Petersburg, Russia.
Malachite Industry Uses
In the past, Malachite was an important copper ore used to produce copper metal: however Malachite is not commonly used industrially anymore.

How Hard Is Malachite?
Malachite measures 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that it is a delicate, soft mineral and great care should be taken whilst handling and storing it to ensure its surface does not become damaged.
Malachite Crystal Care
As Malachite is a soft mineral, it is susceptible to all forms of damage if not handled carefully, especially water damage.
When moving your crystals around, ensure to protect your Malachite Crystal by handling it separately to your other crystals.
It is highly recommended that you do not soak Malachite in water for any length of time as Malachite is prone to cracking and breaking after water submersion (water damage) due to its softness as a mineral.
To clean your Malachite crystal, simply use a soft cloth and give the stone a dry wipe: try to avoid water, but if you do use water, use as little water as possible.
How To Safely Use Malachite
It is safe to handle polished Malachite, although it is recommended to wash your hands after handling Malachite.
It is not safe to drink Malachite crystal elixirs or to eat/drink other preparations of Malachite, Malacholla, or Chrysocolla due to these minerals having a high copper content, which makes them unsafe for human consumption.
