Where Does Sodalite Come From?
Sodalite was originally discovered in Greenland and then Canada, however the stone has since been found in other countries worldwide.
Our Sodalite Crystals, including this piece, are crystals from Brazil, a country renowned for its high-quality Sodalite specimens.
What Is Sodalite Made Of?
Sodalite is a member of the Sodalite Minerals Family: it is a Tectosilicate Mineral, and has high levels of sodium salt content, for which it was named (Sodalite was the Ancient Greek word meaning 'Salt Stone').
Another famous member of the Sodalite Group Of Minerals is Lazurite (the main component of Lapis Lazuli), which also displays a stunning royal-blue hue.
Sodalite can contain other minerals as Mineral Inclusions which add colour and contrast to the stone.
White Calcite and Yellow Calcite are commonly seen in streaks and mottled patterns upon Sodalite's surface, as well as patches of silver Metallic Hematite Inclusions and striking reddish-orange-brown Hematite Inclusions.
Sodalite History
Sodalite was discovered in 1811 in Greenland, but became popular when it was found in Canada many decades later.
The popularity of the stone when it was discovered in Canada and its similarity in appearance to Lapis Lazuli meant that it was often referred to as 'Canadian Lapis Lazuli', or 'Canadian Blue Stone' (other names for Sodalite include 'Princess Blue' or simply 'Blue Stone').
Sodalite Crystal Healing Properties
Sodalite is renowned by crystal healers to be a Stone for Thinkers: as a balm to the intellect, Sodalite can be used to enhance intelligence, insight, logic, and understanding.
Displaying a calming blue colouring, Sodalite is also a brilliant stress-relieving crystal which is said to bring a sense of peace and serenity to its user.
Sodalite Chakras
As a blue crystal, Sodalite resonates strongly with the Third Eye Chakra and Throat Chakra.
When used as a Third Eye Chakra Stone, Sodalite is a brilliant meditation aid and is said to help improve intuition, awareness, and focus.
When used as a Throat Chakra Stone, Sodalite is said to aid self-confidence when communicating with others, and can help its user communicate with others with greater clarity.
How Hard Is Sodalite?
Sodalite measures 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that it is a somewhat durable mineral with some resistance to scratching, but it is still a softer mineral than harder minerals such as Quartz, Agate and Jasper.
Care should be taken not to damage the crystal surface.
Sodalite Crystal Care
To clean your Sodalite Crystal, simply use a little bit of water and dry the stone afterwards with a soft cloth.
It is not recommended to soak Sodalite in water for anything longer than short periods of time (enough for a quick clean or cleanse) because prolonged submersion in water can cause the stone to crack and break, and may cause any Metallic Hematite Inclusions within the stone to rust and corrode, causing further damage.
Avoid using salt water to clean Sodalite as this can dissolve the stone.
Sodalite Crystal Collections
This Large Sodalite Crystal Point is a stunningly beautiful Blue Stone, and would be a welcome addition to any Crystal Collection, especially alongside a piece of Lapis Lazuli.
Crystal Points are wonderful as Crystal Display Pieces and make for unique home decor/ furnishings.
Sodalite is often recommended as a Zodiac Stone/ Birthstone for the Sagittarius Zodiac Sign: consequently, a piece of Sodalite would make a great crystal gift for loved ones who resonate with this Zodiac sign, including those with birthdays in late November and December.
