Where Does Apophyllite Come From?

Apophyllite can be found in countries around the world which have the basalt volcanic environments necessary for Apophyllite crystal growth

Our Natural Apophyllite Crystals, including this piece, are crystals from India, a country renowned for its high-quality Apophyllite Crystals

More specifically, this Natural Apophyllite Crystal was found in Pune, India (Poona, India), a location famous for its rare high-grade Apophyllite Crystal specimens.

What Is Apophyllite Made Of?

Apophyllite is the name for a group of phyllosilicate minerals (meaning that Apophyllite contains silica) ranging in colour from colourless/ clear to white, green, and brown.

The name "Apophyllite" comes from the Greek words meaning "to flake off", because Apophyllite crystals flake apart when they are heated to a high enough temperature.

Apophyllite Minerals often have a high water content, and when Apophyllite Crystals are exposed to high temperatures, they lose the water inside their crystal structures, causing the crystal to flake apart.

Apophyllite Minerals are very similar in composition to Zeolite Minerals, however, these two mineral varieties are not the same.

What Is The Difference Between Apophyllite Crystals And Zeolite Crystals?

Apophyllite and Zeolites are very similar minerals, and Zeolite Crystals commonly grow alongside Apophyllite Crystals in the same basalt volcanic environments, often together in the same specimen alongside other minerals such as Quartz and Calcite.

However, there are slight structural differences between the crystal structures of Zeolite Minerals and Apophyllite Minerals.

Whilst Zeolite Crystals have a network-like tectosilicate crystal structure, Apophyllite Crystals have a layered, sheet-like phyllosilicate crystal structure of alternating silicate layers.

Apophyllite Crystal Meaning And Crystal Healing Properties

Apophyllite Crystals are powerful Crystal Healing Stones, commonly used in Reiki Healing and by other Crystal Healers, often in combination with Zeolite Crystals

Apophyllite is believed by many crystal healers to have a strongly calming, cleansing energy, making it a perfect stone for those struggling with feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

Apophyllite Chakras

Apophyllite is said to work well with the higher chakras (the Third Eye Chakra and Crown Chakra).

Apophyllite is said to be a very mystical stone with deep spiritual energy; when the crystal is used with the higher chakras, many people believe that Apophyllite can open the door to improved psychic abilities and spiritual experiences.

How Hard Is Apophyllite?

Apophyllite measures 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that Apophyllite is a somewhat soft mineral, and great care should be taken not to damage its delicate surface.

Apophyllite Crystal Care

As Apophyllite is a soft mineral, Apophyllite Crystals are susceptible to all forms of damage if not handled carefully.

When moving your crystals around, ensure to protect your Apophyllite Crystal by handling it separately to your other crystals: when harder minerals such as Quartz come into contact with softer minerals such as Apophyllite, your fragile, delicate crystal can easily be scratched or broken.

Can Apophyllite Go In Water?

It is advised to be careful using water to clean Apophyllite Crystals due to the softness of the stone.

To clean your Apophyllite crystal, the safest cleaning method is to simply use a soft, dry cloth and gentle hand movements: do not scrub at the crystal or use lots of pressure as this can quickly damage or break the delicate crystal.

If you wish to use water to cleanse an Apophyllite crystal, there are some measures that can be taken to minimise the risk of damaging this fragile crystal.

Safe Ways Of Cleaning Apophyllite With Water

  • You can try adding a little bit of water to wet your cleaning cloth rather than wetting the Apophyllite crystal directly, and then continue gently cleaning the Apophyllite crystal by hand

  • You can quickly give your Apophyllite crystal a wash under slow, low-pressure, running water

  • Wash your Apophyllite crystal with tepid or lukewarm water

  • It is best to dry your Apophyllite crystal as soon as possible after water exposure by gently patting the crystal dry with a soft cloth.

What To Avoid When Cleaning Apophyllite

  • Avoid using fast, high-pressure running water to clean an Apophyllite crystal as the intensity of the pressure can crack and break the soft crystals

  • Avoid using hot water to cleanse Apophyllite crystals as this stone flakes apart at high temperatures

  • Avoid using salt water to cleanse Apophyllite crystals as salt water is more abrasive than fresh water and can cause quicker and more substantial damage to crystals

  • Avoid soaking Apophyllite in water, especially for prolonged periods of time, because of the risk of damaging and breaking the crystal structure
