What Is Quartz Agate Made Of?

Quartz Agate is a member of the Chalcedony group of stones, which is a member of the large Quartz family.

All types of Quartz are composed from silica (otherwise known as silicon dioxide), but differ due to their crystal structures.

What Does Chalcedony Mean?

Chalcedony gems such as Agate are microcrystalline in structure, which means you can't see the crystals inside the stone.

Agate is generally distinguished from other types of Chalcedony due to its banded patterns and translucency: for example, Jaspers tend to be opaque and you cannot see through them if you shine a light through them.

Other types of Chalcedony gemstones include Jasper and Carnelian

Other Types Of Agate

Agate comprises a diverse group of stones which can come in many colours and patterns.

Examples include Moss Agate, which demonstrates moss-like patterns, and Cherry Blossom Agate, which displays patterns that look like the flowers of the Cherry Blossom tree.

Eye Agate is a prized form of Agate which displays concentric circles resembling eyes/
