Blue Chrysocolla is also known as Gem Silica

Where Does Chrysocolla Come From?

Chrysocolla can be found in various localities around the world, including Australia, Arizona in the USA, and Chile.

Our Chrysocolla Crystals, including this piece, are crystals from Peru, a country renowned for its high-quality crystals.

More specifically, this piece was sourced from the well-known Lily Mine in Peru, which is famous for its high-grade Chrysocolla/ Gem Silica

What Is Chrysocolla Made Of?

Chrysocolla is a copper silicate mineral which varies widely in composition, owing to the differing percentage composition of copper, silica, and other minerals in each unique specimen.

Often, Chrysocolla can also contain traces of other minerals, elements, and metals such as aluminium or inky black, almost metallic Tenorite (as is present in this piece).

Chrysocolla Colours And Gem Silica Chrysocolla

The copper inclusions in Chrysocolla create the stunning, ocean-like blue-green Cyan colour that Chrysocolla is famous for.

Some Chrysocolla Crystals show an even balance of cyan blue-green hues, whilst some are more green in hue (and thus called Green Chrysocolla Crystals), and some are more blue in hue (and thus called Blue Chrysocolla Crystals).

Bright, vivid, gemstone-quality Blue Chrysocolla is known as Gem Silica, Blue Chrysocolla Chalcedony, or Gem Silica Chrysocolla and is one of the most beautiful, rarest blue gemstones available.

Chrysocolla And Other Copper Minerals

Copper Minerals and Copper Stones are very popular crystals, owing to their beautiful blue-green colours.

Chrysocolla/ Gem Silica, Malachite, Malacholla, and Azurite are perhaps the most well-known copper minerals in the crystal and gemstone world.

Chrysocolla, alongside other copper minerals such as Malachite and Azurite, forms Eilat Stone (King Solomon Stone).

Some other Blue Crystals and Green Crystals are coloured by blue-green Copper Inclusions, although not every blue or green stone contains copper: for example, it was originally thought that Amazonite contained copper inclusions, although now it is more commonly thought to be lead inclusions that cause its signature blue-green hue.

Chrysocolla And Malachite: Malacholla

Malachite is a copper mineral similar to Chrysocolla, however whereas Chrysocolla is a Copper Silicate Mineral, Malachite is a Copper Carbonate Mineral

Both Malachite and Chrysocolla contain hydrated copper (Copper Hydroxide).

Malachite and Chrysocolla commonly grow alongside each other, and are common associated minerals

When Malachite Crystals and Chrysocolla Crystals grow together, they form Malacholla, a natural, beautiful mix of Green Malachite and Blue Chrysocolla

Chrysocolla History And Myth

Chrysocolla was named by Greek philosopher Theophrastus using the Greek words for gold ('Chrysos') and glue ('Kola').

The stone was named thus because it was said to have been used as a flux material to solder gold.

Chrysocolla has been used historically as a copper ore

Chrysocolla, alongside other copper minerals and copper stones such as Malachite and Azurite, is one of the minerals that forms a major component of Eilat Stone (also known as King Solomon Stone), which was famous in antiquity.

Chrysocolla Crystal Healing Properties

Chrysocolla is said to be a powerful Crystal Healing Stone

Chrysocolla, when used as a healing crystal, is said to promote a sense of vitality, energy, and motivation in its user, as well as a sense of peace and inner calm: this is fitting for a stone which embodies the calming yet majestic energies of the sea.

Infused with elemental water energy, Chrysocolla is said to help its user to “go with the flow” in life: Chrysocolla is a Stone of Transformation

Consequently, Chrysocolla can be used as a Crystal Healing Stone for Anxiety and stress, helping its user to navigate the ups and downs of life with ease and resilience.

Chrysocolla can also be used as a Crystal Healing Stone to heal rifts in relationships caused by communication difficulties such as misunderstandings:  Chrysocolla clears communication blocks and restores the flow of communication between people.

Chrysocolla Chakras

Chrysocolla (Gem Silica) resonates powerfully with both the Throat Chakra and Heart Chakra, helping to create a sense of unity, harmony, and balance in its user.

Blue Chrysocolla: Throat Chakra Stone

Chrysocolla, as a blue semi precious stone, is most commonly used with the Throat Chakra, where Chrysocolla is believed to act as a Stone of Communication

When Chrysocolla is used as a Throat Chakra Crystal, the stone is thought to enhance communication and speech, much like other blue crystals and blue stones like Amazonite, Sodalite, and Lapis Lazuli

When Chrysocolla is used as a Throat Chakra Stone, the blue crystal is said to help its user to speak clearly and confidently, meaning this stone is helpful for all orators, teachers, and educators.

Chrysocolla is also believed to help users identify and speak the truth, helping them to remain authentic.

For this reason, Chrysocolla is sometimes referred to as the "Teacher's Stone" or "Wise Stone", on account of its affinity for truth, wisdom, and knowledge.

Green Chrysocolla: Heart Chakra Stone

Due to its elements of green colouring, Chrysocolla is also aligned with the Heart Chakra, meaning that it exudes a peaceful, compassionate energy.

When Chrysocolla is used as a Heart Chakra Crystal, the stone is thought to invoke feelings of serenity, peace, and love.

When used as a Heart Chakra Crystal, Chrysocolla can unlock deep feelings of self-compassion, compassion for others, and a warm, loving sense of being nurtured.

When Chrysocolla is used as a Heart Chakra Stone, it is said to bring harmony and peace to its user, especially in times of difficulty.

As a Heart Chakra Stone, Chrysocolla can help its user to calmly navigate the tides of change and embrace the flow of change and transformation.

How Hard Is Chrysocolla?

Due to its widely varying mineral composition, there is no exact figure for the hardness of Chrysocolla on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness: it can range anywhere from 2 to 7 on the Mohs Scale.

Pure Chrysocolla measures 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that it is a delicate, soft mineral and great care should be taken whilst handling and storing it to ensure its surface does not become damaged.

Generally, Chrysocolla is a soft mineral, although Chrysocolla with high silica content (Chrysocolla Chalcedony and Gem Silica) is similar to Quartz in mineral hardness and measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, meaning it is a harder, more durable mineral than pure Chrysocolla.

It is common for Chrysocolla to be a softer mineral that ranks towards the lower end of the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, therefore caution is advised when handling Chrysocolla to ensure your crystal doesn't get broken.

Chrysocolla Crystal Care

As Chrysocolla is a soft mineral (with some exceptions), it is susceptible to all forms of damage if not handled carefully, especially water damage.

When moving your crystals around, ensure to protect your Chrysocolla Crystal by handling it separately to your other crystals: when harder minerals such as Quartz come into contact with softer minerals such as Chrysocolla, your fragile, delicate crystal can easily be scratched or broken.

It is highly recommended that you do not soak Chrysocolla in water for any length of time as Chrysocolla is prone to cracking and breaking after water submersion (water damage) due to its softness as a mineral.

To clean your Chrysocolla crystal, simply use a soft cloth and give the stone a dry wipe: it is best to avoid water completely when cleaning the stone, but if you do use water, use as little water as possible.

How To Safely Use Chrysocolla

It is safe to handle Chrysocolla, however safety precautions must be taken before engaging in lapidary work with Chrysocolla, and it is not safe to eat/drink Chrysocolla preparations as Chrysocolla dust is harmful when inhaled or consumed.

It is not safe to drink Chrysocolla crystal elixirs or to eat/drink other preparations of Malachite, Malacholla, or Chrysocolla due to these minerals having a high copper content, which makes them unsafe for human consumption

Key Rules For Handling Chrysocolla Safely:

  • It is safe to handle Chrysocolla, however it is recommended to wash your hands after handling Chrysocolla, especially Natural Chrysocolla, to clean off any dust particles that may have been transferred onto your hands: this is especially important to do before eating

  • Do not consume or ingest Chrysocolla: this means do not eat Chrysocolla and do not drink Chrysocolla elixirs and other preparations where Chrysocolla has been submerged in a liquid

  • Do not cut or crush Chrysocolla and do not polish Chrysocolla and do not engage in any other lapidary work with Chrysocolla without adequate safety precautions such as wearing a high-quality Respirator Mask and washing your hands regularly
