Where Does Blue Calcite Come From?

Our Blue Calcite Crystals, including this piece, are crystals from Madagascar, a country renowned for its high-quality Blue Calcite specimens.

Madagascar is an island off the coast of Africa known for its unparalleled riches of fossils and crystals

What Type Of Crystal Is Blue Calcite?

Blue Calcite is a blue-coloured type of Calcite mineral.

Calcite is one of the most common minerals on earth, but blue is one of the rarer and more unusual colours to find it in.

What Is Calcite Made Of?

The Calcite family of minerals is a group of Carbonate Minerals primarily made of Calcium Carbonate

Calcite In Rocks

Calcite minerals are an important part of the Earth's Crust, and are commonly found in the rock composition of Sedimentary Rocks such as Limestone, and can also be found in some Metamorphic Rocks such as Metamorphic Marble (Limestone which has been transformed into Marble via heat and pressure), as well as occasionally in some Igneous Rocks

Yellow Calcite is part of the mineral composition of the sedimentary rock Yellow Septarian, and Black Calcite is part of the mineral composition of Black Septarian

Calcite In Fossils And Shells

Calcite minerals also often form a large part of the shells of marine organisms, for example the shells of bi-valves such as oysters.

Calcite mineral replacements are commonly responsible for the stunning colours, patterns, and crystals in fossils such as Ammonite Fossils

Other Types Of Calcite And Calcite Colours

Calcite is a very diverse mineral that comes in many forms and colours, including:

  • Optical Calcite, otherwise known as Iceland Spar, is a clear transparent gem which displays magnificent rainbows when exposed to light, much like Clear Quartz

  • Optical Honey Calcite, also known as Golden Calcite or Amber Calcite, is a golden-coloured type of Optical Calcite (Iceland Spar) which showcases a rich golden honey hue with brilliant transparency

  • Orange Calcite displays a marvellous mix of light and bright orange tones and striking Banded Calcite patterns

  • Caribbean Calcite makes a great companion stone to Blue Calcite, with its aqua hues contrasting nicely against the baby blue tones of Blue Calcite

  • Mangano Calcite, otherwise known as Pink Calcite, is distinguished from other forms of this mineral by its baby pink colouring and white banded patterns

Blue Calcite History

The name "Calcite" is derived from the Latin word "Calx", which means "Lime" (in reference to Calcite being an important mineral in the rock composition of Limestone

Calcite Geological History

Calcite is an important mineral and has been for many hundreds of millions of years, making it an integral part of Earth's History.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, especially during the middle to late Mesozoic Era (a geological time frame that includes the Jurassic Period and Cretaceous Period), the seas and oceans were rich in Calcite, and hence are referred to as "Calcite Seas" by geologists.

In modern times, our seas are instead rich in Aragonite, and hence are referred to as "Aragonite Seas".

Calcite Mineral Replacements In Fossils

Many stunning fossils that are still being discovered today, particularly Ammonite Fossils, were formed in these Calcite Seas, and thus display gorgeously colourful Calcite Mineral Replacements in their outer fossilised Ammonite shells and internal Ammonite chambers.

Calcite In Ancient Egypt: Calcite Alabaster Pottery, Carvings & Sculptures

Calcite has not only been important geologically throughout Earth's History, but it has also been found in the archaeological discoveries of Calcite Alabaster artefacts from ancient civilisations such as Ancient Egypt

The soft calcium-rich rock/mineral Alabaster, made from Calcite or Gypsum, has been used to make Alabaster pottery, sculptures, and carvings since ancient times.

Alabaster has two key varieties; that of Gypsum Alabaster, a softer material used primarily in the sculpture work of Medieval Europe, and that of Calcite Alabaster, a harder material used in the pottery, sculptures, and carvings of Ancient Eastern Civilisations such as Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia

Ancient Alabaster was usually Calcite Alabaster, and it is thought that the name "Alabaster" is derived from the Ancient Egyptian term "A-labaste", which refers to "vessels of the goddess Bast".

Calcite Alabaster had great spiritual meaning for the Ancient Egyptians, and the carvings and decorative ornaments they made from Calcite Alabaster often included representations of the Ancient Egyptian Goddess Bast (for which Alabaster was likely named), whose image was often depicted as a protective lioness goddess in Calcite Alabaster sculptures and carvings

Calcite Alabaster was used by the Ancient Egyptians to sculpt and carve many different ornaments, including cosmetic jars and vases (for example, a Calcite Alabaster Jar adorned with the sculpted figure of the Goddess Bast was found in the Tomb of Tutankhamun), as well as more religious, sacred artefacts such as Canopic Jars

The Ancient Egyptians invented a popular Alabaster pottery tradition, that of making "Alabastra" (small bottles and vases carved from Calcite Alabaster, usually used to hold perfume or oils), and this tradition passed onto Ancient Classical Civilisations such as Ancient Greece

Blue Calcite Crystal Healing Properties

All Calcites are said to amplify positive energies and cleanse negative energies, and to have potent crystal healing powers.

Blue Calcite in particular is considered to be a deeply spiritual Crystal Healing Stone, and purports to have a calming, cleansing aura: the deeply soothing, serene energy of Blue Calcite gifts a sense of peace to its user.

For this reason, Blue Calcite may be an ideal crystal for stress and anxiety relief, and a great crystal for nightmares and sleep difficulties.

Blue Calcite is used by many crystal healers as a Healing Crystal in crystal therapies to help people who struggle with confidence and speech to speak more confidently, thereby aiding the development of their communication skills.

Blue Calcite Chakras

Blue Calcite Crystals, as blue crystals, resonate powerfully with the Third Eye Chakra and the Throat Chakra

When Blue Calcite is used as a Throat Chakra Crystal, this blue gemstone is believed to help the user communicate more clearly and feel more confidence when speaking.

Blue Calcite: Third Eye Chakra Stone

When Blue Calcite is used as a Third Eye Chakra Crystal, this highly spiritual crystal is said to enhance one's psychic powers and abilities, and to aid lucid dreaming and astral travel.

How Hard Is Blue Calcite?

Blue Calcite measures 3 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that this soft mineral is fragile and delicate.

Blue Calcite Crystal Care

Great care should be taken not to damage the delicate crystal surface of Blue Calcite by handling the stone gently and keeping it away from other stones.

To clean your delicate Blue Calcite Crystal, it is best to use a soft cloth to wipe the stone, with no water or as little water as possible.

It is best to avoid soaking Blue Calcite in water because of the risk of water damage, but if you do, minimise the risk of damage by only submerging the stone in water for a short period of time and avoiding using salt water.
