This particular piece was sourced from India

What Is Black Tourmaline Made Of?

Tourmaline is a boron silicate mineral that contains traces of iron, magnesium and titanium, which scientists speculate are the cause of its signature black colour.

Tourmaline Minerals are incredibly versatile, and can occur in many colours such as green, pink, and red (Pink Tourmaline and Red Tourmaline varieties are called Rubellite).

The most famous variety of Tourmaline Stone is Black Tourmaline, also referred to as Schorl.

Black Tourmaline Inclusions

Black Tourmaline Inclusions are found as crystal inclusions in a diverse range of other minerals and crystals, such as in Quartz, Sunstone, and Rainbow Moonstone.

Black Tourmaline crystal inclusions in Quartz creates a Quartz Inclusion Crystal called Tourmaline in Quartz, Quartz with Tourmaline, or Tourmalinated Quartz

Tourmaline Special Properties: Pyroelectric And Piezoelectric

Tourmaline is special in that it is both pyroelectric and piezoelectric: this means that it has the power to generate electrical fields of energy, like Quartz.

When charged by either heating it or rubbing it, Tourmaline becomes polarized and can attract or repel dust particles.

Black Tourmaline History

Tourmaline has been present in many cultures worldwide for millennia.

Shamans of ancient civilisations, including Native American people, used Tourmaline as a protective talisman to ward off negative energy.

In the 1700s, Tourmaline was regularly shipped to the Netherlands from Sri Lanka under the name 'turmali' or 'toramalli', a Sinhalese word meaning 'something small from the Earth'.

'Turmali' was a broad word used to describe many different stones of varying colours, but was most commonly used to describe Zircon

Eventually, the Dutch realised that this mineral was entirely different to Zircon, and in 1794, it finally was designated as 'Tourmaline', with its name derived from the original Sinhalese.

The popularity of Tourmaline exploded in the 1800s, when famed mineralogist George Kunz introduced it to jeweller Tiffany and Co, where it became a highly prized commodity.

The black variety of Tourrmaline also gained a new name, Schorl, after being discovered in tin mines in the German town of the same name (now known as Zschorlau).
