Where Does Black Septarian Come From?

Black Septarian can be found in locations worldwide such as the USA and Africa.

Our Black Septarian Crystals, including this piece, are crystals from Madagascar, a country renowned for its high-quality Septarian specimens.

Madagascar is an island off the coast of Africa known for its unparalleled riches of fossils and crystals

What Is Black Septarian Made Of?

Black Septarian is a rock composed from various minerals including Black Calcite, brown aragonite, grey limestone, chalcedony, and white baryte.

Black Septarian originated as a fossilised mud ball, which over millions of years underwent cycles of cracking and drying out, allowing Black Calcite and Yellow Calcite to leak into the cracks to form its distinctive banded patterns.

How Does Black Septarian Form?

  • 50 to 70 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, many forms of life were abundant in the high seas

  • Over time, volcanic eruptions created sediment on the sea bed and killed these sea creatures

  • As the sea creatures decomposed on the sea bed, the decomposition of their remains released colourful minerals which accumulated in the sediment and were then encased in rock

  • The accumulation of minerals and sedimentation on the seabed led to the creation of nodules, or fossilised mud balls

  • Eventually, the sea levels lowered and receded, exposing this mineral-rich sediment and nodules to the air, which meant the sediment dried out, causing the rock to shrink and then crack open

  • The cracks in the rock were filled with even more colourful minerals such as Black Calcite and Yellow Calcite, which formed concretions: sometimes, the minerals crystallised and formed druzy crystals

  • This rock, rich in various minerals, was named Septeyre or Septarian in reference to the word 'septum', which means 'cracks, partitions, or walls'.

Black Septarian Crystal Healing Properties

Crystal healers report that Black Septarian has a diverse range of uses as a Crystal Healing Stone, but is predominantly a Protection Stone like Smoky Quartz and other black crystals

Black Septarian Chakras

Black Septarian resonates strongly with the Root Chakra (Base Chakra).

Black Septarian: Root Chakra Stone

Black Septarian most potently connects to the Root Chakra due to its connection to the Earth element as a fossil born from the Earth.

This means that Black Septarian is an incredibly grounding Root Chakra Stone, and offers its user protection and security during times of unease and change.

How Hard Is Black Septarian?

Black Septarian measures 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, which means that it is a delicate, soft mineral that will scratch easily if struck by or against harder minerals such as Quartz.

Great care should be taken not to damage the crystal surface by handling the stone gently and keeping it away from other stones.

Black Septarian Crystal Care

To clean your Black Septarian Crystal, simply use a little bit of water and dry the stone afterwards with a soft cloth.

It is not advised to soak Septarian in water because the stone is is likely to lose its lustre and/or flake, crack, or break if it is submerged in water for prolonged periods of time.
