All types of Quartz, including microcrystalline Chalcedony, of which Agates are a form of, are composed from silica (otherwise known as silicon dioxide), and are therefore classed as Silicate Minerals. 

Agate is a translucent/ semi-translucent form of Banded Chalcedony which displays an array of colourful patterns, such as the swirls and angular lines of Banded Agate, the circles and concentric patterns of Eye Agate, and the dendritic patterns seen in Moss Agate (Tree Agate).
