What Type Of Rock Is Jaspilite?

Jaspilite is a siliceous rock, meaning it is rich in silicate minerals, predominantly Quartz.

Jaspilite is a sedimentary rock, and Jaspilite is also a ferruginous rock, meaning that Jaspilite contains iron.

Is Jaspilite Metamorphic?

Jaspilite rock type is considered to be sedimentary rock due to the way Jaspilite rocks form in Banded Iron Formations (BIFs), however most Jaspilite rocks have undergone some form of metamorphism, and for this reason Jaspilite is sometimes referred to as a metamorphosed banded ironstone.

Jaspilite Composition: What Is Jaspilite Rock Made Of?

Jaspilite is a rock composed of different minerals, most notably a gorgeous mixture of vibrant Red Jasper and glistening, metallic Silver Hematite in striking swirling patterns.

Jaspilite rocks are iron-rich, and contain iron oxide minerals such as Hematite and/or Magnetite, although Jaspilite rocks most famously contain high levels of Hematite rather than Magnetite.

Iron is an important part of the composition of Jaspilite rock, not just because of iron oxides like Hematite, but because Jaspilite rocks often contain iron-rich quartzites, also known as ferruginous quartzite

What Is The Mineral In Jaspilite?

The minerals in Jaspilite Rock are Hematite and Quartz.

The Quartz mineral in Jaspilite rock is typically referred to as Red Jasper, Red Chert, or Red Chalcedony, all of which are names for cryptocrystalline Quartz varieties.

A Jaspilite mineral composition can vary in quantity, with some Jaspilite rocks having more Hematite than Quartz/Red Jasper, and vice versa.

Jaspilite Hardness On Mohs Scale

Jaspilite usually measures around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of mineral hardness, meaning it is a relatively hard and durable stone that is quite resistant to scratching.

However, the hardness of Jaspilite Stone can vary depending on the exact composition of the minerals within the stone.

Jaspilite rock is a mixture of the harder mineral Jasper, which measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and Hematite, which is a slightly softer mineral that measures 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

Therefore, Jaspilite can vary in hardness between 5.5 to 7 on the Mohs Scale, depending on the ratio of hematite to jasper within the makeup of the Jaspilite rock.
